It seemed like an offer not
to be refused! In the year 2000, the then mayor encouraged me to train as a
toastmaster during her year of office. I was very flattered, and immediately
sought training. In due course, I obtained the appropriate
qualifications ( coming top of the group in my examinations ), immediately
purchased the correct uniform and started on a new career.
It was in some respect a
natural progression, after all I had bee presenting myself in front of a
full comprehensive school in Farnham and holding the dreaded ASSEMBLY. One
has to be very alert to the needs of those in the situation and keep their
attention and enthusiasm. I was told by observing staff that I had those
qualities.
My first occasion was at a
Civic Dinner which was held at the Officers Mess of The Royal Logistic
Corps. It passed off well! The guest of honour was Sir John Mills C B E who
is a personal friend of mine. He agreed at my request to be the guest
speaker at this splendid occasion. The picture above was taken by a local
photographer, Les Millar, who always has pictures in the local press. I
subsequently served as toastmaster for the ensuing mayor.
I now attend wedding and
other functions on request and ensure that all passes off well and that the
guests thoroughly enjoy themselves. |
